The Purple Martin (Progne subis) is the largest North American swallow at 20 cm length. Adults have a slightly forked tail. These “aerial acrobats” have speed and agility in flight, and when approaching their housing, will dive from the sky with their wings tucked at great speeds. How to Pick a Purple Martin House
Entry holes for martin should be between 2 1/8″ and 2 1/2″.
Entry holes should be 1″ about the floor.
Exterior of the house should be white.
Check for easy access for nest inspection, monitoring, and cleaning.
Check for ventilation and drainage holes or slots.
The interior cavities should be at least 6 x 6 x 6″.
No sharp edges.
Fairly lightweight houses are best since they will less likely to tip over in high winds.
Make sure that there is a way of lowering the house for monitoring that will not tip over the house. There are collapsible poles that safely and easily lower and raise the houses. more
