instant armadillo blues
(john dawson)

when i get up this morning
tell ya what i’m gonna do
gonna pack my suitcase honey
and i’m gonna leave with you
we’re going down to austin

chorus:
going down, see the town, hang around,
down in austin
we’re going down to austin
going down to watch the armadillo rootin’
armadillo rootin’ on the ground
when i get down to austin
i’m gonna sit my butt right down
grab a little bit of that lone star beer, honey
plan to hang around, down in austin

repeat chorus

it’s alright with me
(dave torbert)

the door is there walk right in
we’ll all join heads and look within

how ’bout a country melody
mama cookin’ somethin’ to eat
how ’bout a rock and roll jamboree
you know it’s alright with me

our ways in life have brought us here
ooh together now
if we want we take a look
we’re gonna see how

how ’bout a country melody
mama cookin’ somethin’ to eat
how ’bout a rock and roll jamboree
you know it’s alright with me

a simple song a sing-a-long
ooh-ooh yeah
if you want you sing along
ooh-ooh yeah

how ’bout a country melody
mama cookin’ somethin’ to eat
how ’bout a rock and roll jamboree
you know it’s alright with me
you know it’s alright with me
you know it’s alright with me
you know it’s alright with me
ooh-ooh yeah
ooh-ooh yeah
ooh-ooh yeah

jasper
(john dawson / david nelson)

what goes up it must come down, but
japer’s been up on that mountain
for at least a dozen years by now
said he went to get the gold, but
i just think he’s getting old and
could have made more money with a plow

what’s old jasper doing on that mountain?
no one ever found no gold up there
what’s old jasper doing on that mountain?
sometimes we can see his fire from here

prospectors have lived and died and
jasper could have partly lied but
he said he was once a millionaire
and he could have come back down
for the things folks get in town
but old jasper doesn’t seem to care

kick in the head
(robert hunter)

do you think we can work it on out?
change the whole proposition about?
i’m in no position for an act of sedition
but i really love to scream and shout

half a loaf is better than a kick in the knee
is there gonna be some tea
or just more sympathy?
i really got a pumper on the line this time
it’s mine, mine, mine

i ran to the king of creation
i told him: save a bit for me
the way things look i could have written the book
you know i can hardly read

sally does your dog bite? no, no, no
keep him on a choke chain, reel him out slow
got a little place, call it my own
it never really was a home

went to the college of evil,
the smoke nearly drove me away
i’d go crazy if i wasn’t so lazy,
what more can i say?

the white-face lydian judge
won’t you give a little one-two-three
him down on the corner
singing “little jack horner”
but you gotta let the gravy be

a whole loaf is better than a kick in the head
if you tell me what you mean
i’ll tell you what i said
i sent you for jelly, you come back with jam
who exactly do you think i am?

last lonely eagle
(john dawson)

if you go down round the bend in the river
you’re gonna find a few changes
been going down there
‘cause the people who live
round the bend in the river
have forgotten their dreams
and they’ve cut off their hair

chorus:
and take a last, flying look
at the last lonely eagle
he’s soaring the length of the land
shed a tear for the fate
of the last lonely eagle
for you know that he never will land

if you go down where the lights
push the nighttime
back far enough so you can’t feel the fear
remember the boy who you left on the mountain
who’s sitting alone with the stars and his tears

chorus:
if you go down to the gas-powered flatland
where most of the people just think
that they’re free
remember the peace that you had
on the mountain
come back to the love that you had here with me

chorus
tag:
for you know that he never will land

linda
(john dawson)

did you see the way the sunlight lit upon the hillsides here this morning
did you see me walking in the meadow just before the day was dawning
ah, did you hear my pebbles on your window
and did you hear me asking if you would go

linda come along with me
linda, linda can’t you see
your old man he’s never let you be
so linda won’t you come along with me

did you see the rainbow that the sun chased with the clouds into the morning
and did you see the dew that sparkled lightly on the grass and then was gone
have you ever been to look at heaven
and have you tasted of your cup of living

linda come along with me
linda, linda can’t you see
well the day is getting older girl and so are we
so linda won’t you come along with me
ah linda won’t you come along with me

lochinvar
(john dawson)

someday soon i’ll come by
riding from behind the hill i’m
gonna have a big white horse,
swear to god i will
gonna have a big black hat
gonna have my bedroll packed i’m
gonna come a riding up and knock upon your door

chorus:
oh lady it is such a lovely day
oh lady well i just dropped by to say
i’d like to take you with me would you like to come
when i go a-riding off into the setting sun

when we both were very small
i asked ya would ya leave it all and
come and ride away with me
you said wait and see

well now we’re farther down the line
and dreams should not be left behind, so
now i’m asking ya one more time
to ride away with me

chorus:
oh lady it is such a lovely day
oh lady well i just dropped by to say
i’d like to take you with me
would you like to come
when i go a-riding off into the setting sun

(repeat last line 3x)

lonesome l.a. cowboy
(peter rowan)

chorus:
i’m just a lonesome l.a. cowboy,
hangin’ out, hangin’ on
to your window ledge, callin’ your name
from midnight until dawn
i been smokin’ dope, snortin’ coke,
tryin’ to write a song
forgettin’ everything i know
‘til the next line comes along
forgettin’ everything i know
‘til the next line comes along

there’s so many pretty people in the city,
i swear some of them are girls
i meet’em down at barney’s beanery
with their platform heels and spit curls
i buy’em drinks, we smoke our hopes
try to make it one more night
but when i’m left all alone at last
i feel like i’ll die from fright

repeat chorus:
well, i know chris and rita, and marty mull
are meeting at the troubadour
we’ll get it on with the joy of cooking
while the crowd crys out for more
‘round six o’clock this morning
i’ll be gettin’ kind of slow
when all the shows are over, honey,
tell me, where do you think i go?

repeat chorus

long black veil
(m.j. wilkin and d.dill)

ten years ago on a cool dark night
someone was killed
‘neath the town hall light
there were few at the scene
but they all agreed
that the slayer who ran
looked an awful lot like me

the judge said “son, what is your alibi?
if you were somewhere else,
then you won’t have to die”
i spoke not a word , ‘though it meant my life
i had been in the arms of my best friend’s wife

she walks these hills in a long black veil
she visits my grave when the night winds wail
nobody knows, nobody sees
nobody knows but me

the scaffold was high and eternity neared
she stands in the crowd and sheds not a tear
but sometimes at night
when the cold wind moans
in a long black veil
she cries out over my bones

she walks these hills in a long black veil
she visits my grave whenthe night winds wail
nobody knows, nobody sees
nobody knows but me

louisiana lady
(john dawson)

i been on this road for seven days
and i’m so beat my vision’s just a yellow haze
but i know that i am gonna make it home tonight
and then i’m gonna see my light

chorus:
yeah, tonight i’ll see my louisiana lady
my louisiana lady’s gonna
sleep with me tonight, and hold me tight.
louisiana lady know that i need you
louisiana lady i love you
louisiana lady i love you

six more hours till i make new orleans
i been doin’ too much speed i’m feelin’ down right mean
and i think that i can cut an hour off the time
if i keep lady on my mind

repeat chorus
every man has got to earn his pay
but i feel so bad each time i have to go away
but when i get home tonight it’s gonna be worthwhile
i’m gonna see my lady smile

yeah, tonight i’ll see my louisiana lady
my louisiana lady’s gonna
sleep with me tonight, and hold me tight.
louisiana lady know that i need you
louisiana lady i love you
louisiana lady i love you

old man noll
(john dawson)

old man noll was a mean old soul
he lived across the hill
i didn’t know him very well
and now i never will

he had some sheep that grazed his land
and he was very old
and all the kids would stay away
we knew he was a scold

but our best treehouse was on his hill
and our navy sailed on his pond
the years have only brought me pain
now i’m sad the old man’s gone ..cause now

chorus:
the freeway rolls where old man noll
used to run his sheep in the meadow
and as you drive by, if you really try
you still can see his shadow

old man noll was a mean old soul
at least the kids thought so
but we were much, much younger then
and now, i just don’t know

the way it was when it was his
the land was clear and free
the land was life and with his wife
was all that he could see

so when the houses came and brought
the kids who thought he was mean
i think that now, at last i see
how sad he must have been …cause now

the freeway rolls where old man noll
used to run his sheep in the meadow
and as you drive by, if you really try
you still can see his shadow
